Feminello Siracusano variety of lemon, contrary to most other citrus fruits, blossoms more or less every 40 days, therefore this lemon is available all year round. Yet, depending on the climatic conditions and the season the fruits may be much different from one another. The lemons picked from November to February are called “primofiore” and are bright green turning into yellowish. Lemons planted in the spring (from April until June) are called “bianchetto” or “maiolino”, have an elliptical form and their colour ranges from yellow to pale. In the summer (from July until October) the tree has green fruits, hence the name “verdello” - from the Italian word verde – green. The fruits are much smaller and have tough skin and compact flesh, they are often mistaken for other citrus fruit – the lime. The degree of colouration depends on the temperature differences between day and night. The lower the temperatures, and the higher the diurnal range, the more yellow the skin turns.
