Pink grapefruit is a spontaneous mutation of yellow grapefruit, which was discovered in Texas in the 1930-s, and the Star Rugby variety that comes from the 1970s. The fruit is very big – its weight may even exceed half a kilo. The flesh is intensely pink, it is juicy, slightly bitter in taste. It has multiple nutritious characteristics, it aids the cleansing of the body. The picking season lasts from December until March - depending on the weather.

Tipicamente viene spremuto, ma il mio modo preferito di mangiarlo (e di mio padre) è il seguente: tagliare a metà il frutto (lungo l’equatore...), con un coltello (gli inglesi ne hanno inventato uno ricurvo apposito…) separare la polpa dalla buccia scavandola dall’interno, ma senza rimuoverla. Poi praticare dei tagli lungo i setti degli spicchi per porzionarlo, aggiungere un goccio di vodka (o gin), spolverare con zucchero di canna e mangiare col cucchiaino usando la stessa buccia come coppetta. Come aperitivo fa la sua degna figura.
